Nothing breaks, so the lapse is usually noticed only when the next invoice or cost report shows a step up in compute cost. An expired reservation cannot be renewed after the fact; the only fix is a new purchase, and the on-demand charges between expiry and repurchase are lost savings. Renewal can lapse in several documented ways. The renewal setting is on by default at purchase, but a reservation created by a renewal is set to auto-renew off, so a reservation that renewed once lapses at the end of its next term unless someone re-enables renewal. Splitting, merging or transferring a reservation, transferring it to an EA, or renewing the enrollment also cancels renewal, and a renewal is not processed if payment fails, the SKU is no longer active, or the price changes after the renewal price is locked. Renewal emails go to reservation owners and billing contacts who may have changed roles.
